Applying for the South Africa Holiday and Tourist Visa

South Africa is a beautiful place to visit, but before you arrive, you must confirm if your home country of nationality is on the South African Visa Exemption List for 30 – 90 Days.

The South African Visitor and Tourist Visa is exclusively for short term holidays and tourism purposes.

Tourist/Holiday Visa

To enter South Africa on a short-term visa, you need to meet the following requirements:

  • You must have a passport or travel document valid for no less than 30 days after your visit. The passport must have two unused pages. You’ll also need two colour passport photographs
  • You need to complete The DHA-84 (Form 11), which is the official application form
  • At this point, you’ll have to pay the prescribed application fees
  • If you come from a country with yellow fever, you must supply a certificate verifying that you’ve been vaccinated. People without proof of vaccination may be denied entry to South Africa. Before you even book your tickets, check to see if your country is on the list of places that need vaccination certificates
  • South African travel visa requirements include documents stating the reason and duration of your visit and documentation proving return travel. Your return airline ticket will suffice
  • If you’re travelling with minor children, your own or others, you need proof of guardianship or custody. If a minor child is travelling to South Africa on their own, confirmation of consent from the guardian is required
  • Finally, you need to prove you have the financial means to pay for your living expenses during your stay in South Africa

South Africa allows certain countries, Visa Free Tourism, meaning that they require no Visitor/Tourist Visa Application.
The visit duration ranges from between 30 days to 90 days.

You can apply for a tourist visa extension in South Africa once only, this should be done 60 days prior to the expiry of your original tourist visa. However, if you have less than 60 days left on your tourist visa, you can still apply for an extension adding a “letter of good cause” explaining while you are late in submitting your application and it will be at the discretion of Home Affairs to grant you an extension or not.

If you’re on a short-term visa, your dependents must complete all the forms and meet the requirements to apply for an accompanying Family and Partner Visa.

As far as short-term visas are concerned, validity depends on whether you’re from a visa-restricted or visa-exempt country.

Visitors from Germany, the USA, and the UK are visa-exempt. When they arrive in South Africa, they will get a Business Visitor Visa valid for 90 days.

Tourists from some African countries, including Namibia, Seychelles, Tanzania, and Zambia, are permitted to spend up to 90 days a year in South Africa.

Travellers from Hong Kong, Mauritius, and South Korea are permitted to stay in the country for up to 30 days.

Visitors from visa-restricted countries must apply at the South African mission abroad or a VSF office before their intended travel date.

Long-term visas are valid for up to three years. It’s possible to renew the visa within South Africa, provided you still meet all of the requirements for one of the long-term visas in South Africa.

Tourst/Visitor/Holiday visas don’t provide a path to immigrate permanently to South Africa.
