Long stay “D” Study Visa

The requirements for a short-stay student visa are very specific:
Forms and documents:
Many forms and documents are required if you want to study in Ireland.

- Application letter
- The reason you want to come to Ireland
- Dates you plan to arrive and leave
- Study plan
- Proof of accommodation
- Medical and travel insurance
- Proof of payment for fees
- Two colour passport-size photographs
- Current passport
- Copies of all previous passports
- Proof of sufficient funds
- Guarantee you will return home
- Previous visa refusals
If you have a job in your home country, you must also provide the following:
- Your three most recent original pay slips
- A letter from your employer that states:
- How long you’ve been employed there
- The dates you are on vacation
- The date you will return to work
If you are currently attending an educational institution in your home country, you must also provide a letter that states:
- The course you are studying
- How many years you’ve been a student there
- The number of years/semesters you have left to complete your course.
If you have any family in your home country, you must also provide the following:
- A short description of your family, including:
- Your family status.
- Any children or dependents.
Note: If you are married and your spouse is not coming to Ireland with you, you should include your original marriage certificate with your application for an Ireland study visa.
If you own or rent property in your home country, you must also provide:
- A description of your property.

Applications for long-stay visas must include the following documents
Forms and documents:
- Application form
- Application letter
- Two colour passport-sized photos
- Current passport
- Copies of previous passports
- Evidence that you enrolled in a privately funded course
- Evidence accounting for any gaps in your educational history
- Proof of payment of fees to the educational institution.
- Evidence that you have the academic ability to follow your chosen course
- Evidence of your level of English or Irish
- Proof of sufficient funds
- Medical insurance
- Previous visa refusals
If you are under 18 years old, additional requirements include the following:
- Birth certificate
- Consent of parent/legal guardian
- Proof of accommodation and vetting certificate
How long can you stay in Ireland on a long-stay student visa?
The long-stay visa is for those who want to study in Ireland for longer than 90 days. You are allowed to stay for the duration of your course. When you graduate from your course, you can apply for a one-year stay-back visa to look for a job in Ireland. This visa is extended to two years for postgraduate students.
